The Hummingbird Collective continues to support Peruvian youngsters through the library project

Thanks to the work of Hummingbirds worldwide, the library project in Huyro will continue to grow, enabling children from the area to discover the joy of learning in a clean, safe and educational environment.   The library was developed with the Municipal government of Huayopata based in Huyro and is located in the Municipal headquarters.

The Municipality provided the space and staff, whilst the Hummingbird Collective provided the books and furniture to equip it. Books range from traditional Andean fairy tales for young children, to more adult themes such as the importance of recycling and even novels. A strong emphasis has been put on keeping the literature relevant for children and library users – there is a strong Andean theme to the books. In this way the library aims to keep the project relevant to the cultural heritage programs that are run in the area, ensuring that children grow up learning about their cultures and find a sense of pride in their cultural identity.

With Perú´s primary education rated as 135 out 142 countries by the World Economic Forum in terms of quality, and only 1.2% of Peruvian children in the 6 year of primary school achieving the expected levels in Integral Communication, improving Peruvian education is clearly a vital task.
